The participants were classified into three categories -- Year Six pupils who will be sitting for the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination this year, and Form Three and Form Five students who are candidates for this year's Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations. They were selected from 800 applicants.
Felcra (Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority) has 24 settlement schemes throughout Johor specialising in oil palm and rubber.
According to programme spokesperson Nurul Ain Samsuri, "the response was really extraordinary."
The programme was part of Felcra Berhad's efforts to develop excellence, encourage perseverance and do away with negative attitude among Felcra pupils.
The programme kicked off with an ice-breaking session conducted by facilitators who are also teachers from the Johor Baru district and experts in core examination subjects like Mathematics, Science, English and Bahasa Malaysia. There were also motivational talks.
For 12-year-old Shamian Kamila Solehuddin, a Year Six pupil from the Felcra Sungai Ara settlement in Kota Tinggi, the three-day course was a thrilling experience.
"The accommodation was very conducive and calm, the teachers very proficient and the menu was mouth watering," she said.
PMR student Mohd Faiz Mohd Mansor, 14, who hails from the Felcra Bukit Kepong settlement said: "The motivational talk by the ustaz was very heartening and full of wisdom. I now realise that life is not a bed full of roses, and in order to succeed, I need to strive the best I can."
